Wedding Insurance Guide

So, what exactly is wedding insurance, and do you need it? We hope this information is helpful in guiding your decision!

Wedding insurance is a type of event insurance that protects you from losses due to circumstances beyond your control.

What wedding insurance does cover:

  • Unforeseen events causing damage to the venue or injury at the wedding

  • Extreme weather

  • Problems with the venue or vendors

  • Military deployment

  • Lost or stolen gifts

What wedding insurance does not usually cover:

  • Lack of funds (or if you suddenly can't afford your wedding)

  • When people get cold feet or pull out of a wedding

  • Anything Covid related

Many of the venues we work with specifically require event insurance, so keep this in mind when you are venue shopping. Be sure to check your contract for the requirements (your planner will also check this for you).

There are two kinds of wedding insurance:

  1. Liability Coverage- this type generally covers injuries or property damage that occurs during your wedding. You can also add liquor liability coverage to protect from alcohol-related incidents.

  2. Cancellation Coverage- this type protects you from canceling or costs associated with postponing your wedding from unforeseen circumstances like critical injury or illness.

Some policies include both liability and cancellation coverage, but every insurance policy and every wedding scenario is different. Read through the details and especially the exclusions before purchasing a policy. It may also be wise to obtain insurance for your other wedding-related events or your honeymoon.

When it comes to pandemics or epidemics, things get a little tricky. If you decide to get cancellation insurance, you need to specifically ask if COVID-19 is covered. Your policy might cover cancellations due to epidemics, but will likely specifically exclude this one as well as government regulations. Since COVID- 19 is now a “known event” there likely won’t be any policies that will cover it or other pandemics. Our best advice here is don't assume your plan is all encompassing, and make sure you ask questions with the insurance company before purchasing your policy.
