Name Change Information

Changing Your Name After Marriage

Changing your name after marriage can be a long and tedious process. We’ve outlined a quick and easy list below to guide you through. We suggest keeping your current name until after your honeymoon as the timeline to update your passport for traveling could take 3-4 months.

Name Change Checklist:

Step 1: Obtain certified copies of your marriage license (not photocopies). 2-3 copies are good to start with.

Step 2: Change your name with the Social Security Administration.

  • You can mail in the application with your marriage license and other required files or visit a local office. Be sure to follow all directions!

  • Application: https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf

  • The SSA will also update the IRS with your new name.

Step 3: Update your Driver’s License.

  • This must be done in person and you will be required to take a new photo as well as pay the renewal fees. Wait until you receive your new social security card to do this step.

  • Be sure to visit your state’s DMV site to view a list of required documents.

Step 4: Update your passport.

  • Changing your name on your passport is considered a correction. If your passport was issued less than a year ago, you'll be able to have the correction made without paying a fee. However, if you've had your current passport for a year or more, the fee for a change and a new passport book is $110.

  • All passport changes must be made by mail. You can fill out the application and find all the information you need at: https://pptform.state.gov/PassportWizardMain.aspx

  • Be sure to also update your travel services like TSA Pre-Check and your Global Entry card.

Step 5: Update your bank information.

  • In general, it is believed the fastest way to do this is to go into a branch with your new driver’s license and marriage license. This is also a great time to combine your bank accounts!

Step 6: Update your essential information.

  • Payroll/HR records with your employer

  • Credit Cards (if not from your bank)

  • Loans- car loans, student loans, etc.

  • Mortgage company/landlord

  • HOA, property tax records, title company

  • Investment/savings accounts

  • Insurance (you can update your name at your doctor’s or care provider’s offices on your next visit)

  • Utility companies- Gas, water, electricity

  • Voter registration

  • Your will with your attorney

  • Car title

Step 7: Update all other services.

  • Phone service (including the name that appears when you call someone)

  • Cable/TV subscriptions

  • Email signatures

  • Schools & Alumni associations

  • Professional licenses/certifications

  • Memberships/associations

  • Charities

  • Rewards accounts, especially airlines and travel rewards

It is likely you will find new things you need to change your name on for a year or more. Most places don’t require a copy of your marriage license to change your name but make sure to keep official copies in your records at all times.
